TES Staffing is recruiting a Plant Engineering Technician I to join the Facilities Management team at Rochester Institute of Technology.

This isn't a dead-end maintenance position.

RIT operates a massive campus with its own mechanical systems, heating and cooling equipment, plumbing infrastructure, central plant operations and specialized facilities, including everything from residence halls to an ice rink.

You'll learn how those systems work, train alongside experienced Plant Engineering professionals, and have opportunities to build skills across multiple trades.

What You'll Do

As a Plant Engineering Technician I, you'll help keep a 24/7 university campus running.

Your shift will include a combination of scheduled building rounds and responding to work orders as they come in.

You'll:

• Perform rounds throughout campus mechanical rooms and facilities

• Check equipment and building systems for proper operation

• Respond to maintenance calls and work orders

• Help troubleshoot heating, cooling and mechanical issues

• Respond to plumbing problems, leaks and other building concerns

• Assist experienced Plant Engineering Technicians with repairs and troubleshooting

• Document completed work through RIT's work-order system

• Travel between buildings on RIT's main campus and adjacent facilities using university vehicles

• Work alongside experienced technicians—you will not be expected to figure everything out alone

Expect to be on your feet. RIT is a large campus, and this position involves a significant amount of walking and hands-on work.

Don't Know a Central Plant Yet? That's Okay.

You don't need to walk in knowing RIT's systems.

New technicians will initially train on A shift, when the largest number of experienced team members are available. You'll learn the campus, mechanical rooms, equipment, rounds, work-order system and RIT's procedures before transitioning to B shift.

Once you move to B shift, you'll continue working as part of a crew with experienced Plant Engineering staff available for support.

Who We're Looking For

Mechanical aptitude matters most.

This could be a great fit if your background includes:

• HVAC

• Mechanical contracting

• Residential or commercial heating and cooling

• Automotive repair

• Plumbing

• Building maintenance

• Facilities

• Industrial or mechanical equipment

• Another hands-on mechanical trade

You should be someone who genuinely enjoys troubleshooting: something isn't working, and you want to know why.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have:

• An Associate degree in a related technical field OR approximately two years of relevant hands-on field experience

• Strong mechanical aptitude

• Ability to perform physical, hands-on work and walk throughout a large campus

• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

• Ability to successfully complete required background screening

• Reliable transportation and the ability to consistently report for a 3:00 PM shift

Because this position is intended to provide a path to permanent RIT employment, candidates must ultimately meet RIT's minimum qualifications for the permanent role.
